The Year’s Events For the Spokane Rose Society
The Spokane Rose Society (SRS) has several types of events throughout the year. Some are open to the public, others are members only. Here are the general types of events and gatherings that we have, scroll down a bit for special events.
General meetings are held monthly, usually on the 4th Wednesday, and are open to the public. They are at at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room by the conservatory at Manito Park in Spokane, Washington. Please see our calendar (below) for exact times and locations. Some club business will be discussed and there is usually some kind of presentation. There is socializing afterwards. Occasionally these meetings are dropped and replaced with some event, such as the Rose Show. Guests are always welcome. Here’s the map to the meeting room
Board Meetings are held quarterly and are open to all club members. Usually they are held in the Manito meeting room at 6pm. This year’s meetings are:
- Tues, May 8, 2018
- Tues, August 14, 2018
- Wed, December 5, 2018
Garden Tours are held a few times per year and are open to club members. There are a lot of very nice gardens in the Spokane area and we’ve managed to tour quite a few of them.
Special Events, such as the Rose Show, are held annually.
The 2018 Event Calendar
Unless otherwise stated, all events are at the Manito Meeting Room. Meetings are all at 7pm unless otherwise specified.
March 28: Anne Franks will bring us a Demonstration on Floral Arranging and Design. With much experience in this art, you will get helpful tips and ideas to be able to create your own designs.
April 25: Plant Auction – Bring starts from your garden, roses you want to let someone else love, other plants you wish to share. It is all good fun bidding against one another, and proceeds go to support the rose society.
May 23, our regular night, will feature either Growing Mushrooms or Beneficial Insects in the Garden. Stay tuned for details.
June 22: Rose Show month begins with a special speaker from Portland, Harry Landers, speaking at 7 pm on June 22 at St. John’s Cathedral.
June 23: The Rose Show will be held at Northland Rosarium on June 23.
July is garden tour month. Since we like to have our gardens at the time of good bloom, this date will be announced later. It will feature homes on the southwest side of Spokane around Qualchan and Eagle Ridge.
August 22: Steve Smith has graciously agreed to give a tour at Rose Hill beginning at 4 pm. We will then host Steve and his wife, Bev, at dinner. Everyone is invited to attend this no-host event. Details will follow.
September 25: This is when we have our “Six-pack Rose Show.” No, it is not a drinking event, but an informal rose show. You bring your roses in any container, we ALL judge the show, and then we discuss the entries. This is our way of encouraging everyone to take part in our June Rose Show because you will see how to exhibit your roses, how they are judged, and what makes up a winner.
October 24: This is the one meeting of the year when we conduct business. We elect new officers, talk over business, and then we have a program to lighten up the rest of the evening. It is important that our members come and voice their opinions, concerns, whatever you wish.
November 13, Tuesday: we have our annual potluck dinner. It is our way of saying goodbye to the rose year, enjoying the company of good rose friends AND good food. We have tried dinner out at various places, but we seem to gravitate back to our own cooking, and it is always great.
